Editors prefer the hard copy method as opposed to the electronic method for various reasons:
- There is a more intimate relationship between editor and writer.
- The electronic method is too hard on the editor's health (i.e. eye strain, back pain, arthritis, etc.)
- By using the hard copy method, more of the author's mistakes are found initially than by using the electronic method.

In his article, David Dayton discovered that many authors and editors prefer the hard copy method instead of electronic copies. Dayton found that the main reason for this belief was the long distance between author and editor.
